Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)

Endodontics is a specialty related to dentistry. Endodontists are called endodontists after completing their training process. Root canal treatment is performed by endodontist specialists.

Endodontics, which is frequently encountered today in connection with root canal treatment, is a Latin term. Endodontics, which is derived from the words endo (internal) and donti (tooth), is a treatment method that aims to preserve the structure of the tooth.

Root canal treatment performed by endodontists is often confused with filling procedures. The situation in root canal treatment is a little different while the part of the tooth that appears in the mouth is treated during the filling process. Canal treatment is the name given to the root area of the tooth by cleaning it.

Root Canal Treatment

Endodontics is commonly known as root canal therapy. In case of large-scale dental caries or inflammation of the tooth, endodontics (root canal treatment is applied to the patient. Endodontics, one of the treatment methods that allow the patient to save the tooth without extraction, is a very important application for the tooth despite its simple application.

Local anesthesia is applied during the endodontics procedure. In this way, the patient does not feel any pain during the operation process. Contrary to fear, root canal treatment is not a painful treatment.

Root canal treatment is applied in situations such as advanced erosion (caries or fractures) in the teeth, advanced caries up to the nerve, and advanced gum disease.

In some cases, root canal treatment is completed in a single appointment whilst others can last more than an appointment. This varies according to how damaged the tooth is. In treatments that are completed in more than one appointment, special care shall be necessary to not harm the temporary filling. For this, it is recommended for people to not consume hard foods while they are under the effect of anesthesia. Since the sensations are removed under anesthesia, the temporary filling area can be pushed without being noticed, which may cause it to fall. Root canal treatment is performed as follows:

  • Local anesthesia is applied
  • Decays are cleaned to reach the nerve, they all get cleaned up
  • The area where root canal treatment will be applied is shaped up till the tip of the tooth root
  • Root canal treatment can be completed in a single appointment depending on the condition of the tooth, or there may be situations that require more than one session
  • In cases where more than one session is required, for each session, healing treatments are applied
  • At the last stage, the treatment is completed by using special filling materials from the tip of the shaped canal to the other end of the tooth.

Fiber Application

Fiber application is applied in three different types. These are cast posts, screw posts, and fiber posts. In some cases, there may be too much material loss on the tooth. In such cases, fiber applications are used to protect the structure of the tooth and prevent it from breaking. If there is no high amount of material loss, the treatment can be completed with the normal filling method.

However, from time to time, there may be no tooth wall left. In this type of tooth, if the root is intact, a post that supports the root canal of the tooth can be made and the tooth can be saved with a crown coating on the support. Fiber posts provide an aesthetic appearance thanks to their ceramic structure. The risk of breakage is much less compared to others.

Post-core application

With the advances in medicine, major changes continue to occur in the field of dental treatment. One of them is the post-core application. The post-core application, which is placed in the root of the teeth before ceramic porcelain such as zirconium is performed, provides both a more robust treatment and a more aesthetic appearance. With the post-core application, the aesthetics and functionality of the teeth are restored as on the first day.

With post-application applied after root canal treatment, it is possible to have more aesthetic features and more resistant teeth. Thanks to the developing technology, very successful results are obtained in a short time with the painless post-core application without any need for anesthesia.
